The HKUST VisLab is dedicated to advancing the frontiers of data visualization, driven by a passion for transformative research with far-reaching impact.

Project Overview

Digital Twin is dedicated to creating virtual representations of real-world environments using advanced simulation and data integration techniques, aiming to drive smarter decision-making through immersive analytics. At its core, Digital Twin bridges the physical and digital realms by presenting real-world data in a virtual format, assisting in real-world decision-making, with changes in the physical world reflected in digital information.

Currently, we have three ongoing digital twin projects. The first project, Digital Campus, acts as a data-driven platform to monitor real-time crowd movements and facility statuses, providing a smart campus experience that supports informed decision-making while ensuring user privacy. The second project aims to establish a digital twin for Hong Kong's Coastline. We use real-time sensor data to predict extreme storm surges and aid in disaster management. The third project, focused on the Greater Bay Area, creates an earth system digital twin to manage renewable energy resources, support sustainable urban planning, and includes educational games for public outreach and awareness. We involve cutting-edge technologies including big data, AI, immersive visual analytics, and rendering technologies to foster smarter digital twin solutions.
